Rethinking the Content Inventory: Exploration

Battle wounds of an inventory are scars that each offer a great story--and informative lesson that should affect project scope, budget maneuvering, and a more thoughtful allocation of effort. I agree with your approach: a good inventory that reveals meaningful insight (and not just page count) to the quality, relevancy, and currency of your content takes human exploration and learning over time. In turn, that reveals new questions and answers. I'm currently supporting an audit process in which we're spotting content types and patterns along the way. Some conform to our initial hypotheses, laid out in the categories with which we started, but other content types help grow our assumptions. We recently surfaced a large subset of content that informed a level of nomenclature we hadn't previously considered. This audit is proceeding exactly as it should: we're not just trying to complete a spreadsheet, but rather we're establishing new columns and levels of detail as we see fit.

A content inventory is an act of archeological investigation; like any good explorer, a content strategist has to leave room for serendipity in the dirt.
